1973年4月12日アイオワ州スーシティー生まれ。
1990年11月、17歳の時 " Thelonius Monk Institute's trumpet competition " で Nicholas Payton や Marcus Printup を差し置き見事優勝。翌年高校卒業後 The Manhattan School of Music に進み、Lew Soloff に師事。その後ニューヨークの The Mingus Big Band や The Michel Camilo Big Band で演奏し、 Gerry Mulligan、Wynton Marsalis、Wycliffe Gordon、Horace Silver、Walter Blanding 達と交流。1994年からは The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra のメンバーとなり、やがてバンドリーダーとして数々のアルバムをリリース。その後は自身のコンボを組み精力的に活動し、数々のCDをを発表している。
